South Carolina’s Adopt-A-Highway program is a statewide volunteer initiative that allows community groups, businesses, schools, and organizations to “adopt” a stretch of state-maintained roadway and keep it clean through regular litter pickups. Each group is assigned (or may request) a specific two-mile segment. This ensures that all adopted roads receive consistent care and that volunteers know exactly where their responsibilities begin and end.
Pawleys Island Kiwanis has sponsored Sandy Island Road. We pick up from Highway 17 all the way to the end of Sandy Island Road at the marina (it’s a long road). The 3rd Saturday of each month (weather permitting), we volunteer to keep this road clean. It’s amazing what you see on the side of the road. However, this activity is an opportunity to chat with other members while enjoying the sunshine. We provide the vests, bags, and pickers; Just bring your gloves. This is an easy and quick way to get involved without a long-term commitment. This event typically takes 60-90 minutes.
